"For God so loved the world... that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16
My bride and I just celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary. That was quite an accomplishment. Just to put it into perspective, she gave me some facts. That time represented 720 months, 3,130 weeks, 21,915 days, and 525,949 hours. It has been a wonderful time, and I love her more now than when we were married.
Those figures sound like an eternity, but compared to biblical eternity, they are nothing. The Bible speaks about eternity in several related ways: God's eternal nature, eternal life, and the everlasting destiny of human beings.
God Is Eternal. The Bible teaches that God has no beginning and no end. This means God exists outside the limitations of time that humans experience. Eternity Is Placed in Human Hearts. The Bible suggests that humans have an awareness that life is about more than the present world. Many interpret this as meaning people naturally long for lasting meaning, purpose, and connection with God.
One of the central teachings of the New Testament is that eternal life is available through faith in Jesus Christ:
John 3:16: "For God so loved the world... that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
John 17:3: Defines eternal life as knowing God and Jesus Christ.
Romans 6:23: "The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
In the Bible, eternal life is not only endless existence; it is a restored relationship with God that begins now and continues forever. The Bible presents eternity as the ultimate destiny of every person. The biblical hope is not merely souls existing forever in heaven, but God renewing creation.
The Bible presents eternity as:
The timeless existence of God.
Humanity's longing for what is everlasting.
Eternal life through a relationship with God.
An everlasting destiny beyond physical death.
A future renewed creation where God dwells with His people forever.
In Scripture, eternity is not primarily about an infinite amount of time; it is ultimately about sharing in the eternal life and presence of God.
Are you ready for eternity with Jesus?
