As a single mom living on a teacher’s salary, I had received a notice that my flower beds needed to be better maintained. One afternoon I was outside working on them — really just raking the dirt to make it look like it had been freshly mulched. While I was there, I remember asking God out loud, “Lord, if I only had $50 to buy a bag of mulch to spread on these beds, it would help me so much.”
I did the best I could with what I had. When I finally stood up, looked over the beds, and brushed myself off, I thought, hopefully this will be enough.
Several days later, I was walking back from checking the mail when I stopped in awe. My flower beds had fresh mulch. I remember thinking, Wait… what? I looked around at my neighbors’ yards, assuming someone must have had extra mulch and decided to share. But no — no one else’s beds had been done.
In that moment, it hit me. I had asked God for mulch. I had asked God for dirt — and He answered my prayer. As tears flowed, I thanked Him for seeing me, hearing me, and loving me in a way no human ever could. That moment sealed my faith forever.
The next day, my elderly neighbor — who is not a believer — saw me outside. He told me that his adult son, who owns a landscaping company, had stopped by to see him while he was in the area. “I told my son to put mulch in your beds,” he said. I replied, “Actually, God did it. I asked God for it.” I am still in awe: if God would give me something as small as dirt, how much more will He provide?
